‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig has revealed she fears the film could be ‘career-ending’.

“It was scary. “I think the feeling I had was knowing it was going to be really interesting terror. Usually, that’s where the best stuff happens, when you’re like, ‘I’m scared of this.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be the end of a career,’ then you’re like, ‘Well, I should probably do this,'” Gerwig admitted.

The director also praised the owners of the popular franchise for giving him the freedom to execute his vision.

“Mattel has been an amazing partner who has given us such confidence and such freedom and I think that’s incredibly rare,” Gerwig said. “Whatever we wanted, they didn’t try to micromanage it. They were completely on board as partners and that was phenomenal.

She also noted that the company gave her access to the complete Barbie archives. “They really gave us their confidence,” she said. “And I think a big reason for that was actually Margot and Tom. [Ackerley] And like they also, you know, said, ‘We want to make this movie and we want to make the vision of it. We don’t need to make a Barbie movie. We want to build it.”

As a result, Gerwig said, she was “very supportive of what I wanted to do.” She added, “I usually know on a gut level if something feels right. And if it doesn’t, you can lie to yourself, but it’s not going to end up in a good place.”
